Rick Wilkinson, founder of San Diego-based Austin Ribbon Microphones, blends over 30 years of experience as a performing surf guitarist with formal electronics training and a career in Technical Training to create high-quality, hand-built audio gear. His career, spanning from a "go-to" repair technician to a specialized manufacturer, is defined by a dedication to vintage sound.

His career spans Technical Service for Semiconductor Fabs, Training Air Traffic Controllers for the FAA, writing technical manuals for remotley piloted aircraft, and electro-mechanical and hydraulic training for Caterpillar Tractor.

His philosophy emphasizes sustainability and hands-on craftsmanship, aimed at reducing disposable audio equipment.

Since 2011, Rick has fostered a community of DIY education by conducting ribbon microphone workshops at Colleges, high schools and professional institutions like The Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences (CRAS).
​
Through collaborations with industry figures and friends like David Royer, Tom Masso, and Paul Abbott, he continues to mentor the next generation of audio engineers.
